Pros | Cons |
|

Why we like it: Being able to customize how you earn cash back is a unique feature of this card and could provide flexibility if you occasionally have different types of expenses. Available categories to choose from include gas, online shopping, dining, travel (including flights and hotel stays), drugstores, and home improvement/furnishings.
You can also boost your earning potential by 25% to 75% if you’re a member of the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program.

- Intro APR on purchases: 0% intro APR for 15 billing cycles on purchases (then 18.24% - 28.24% Variable)

Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card
Pros | Cons |
|
|
The Wells Fargo Autograph Card makes sense if you want a travel credit card with high rewards rates in common categories.
Welcome offer: Earn 30,000 bonus points when you spend $1,500 in purchases in the first 3 months (that’s a $300 cash redemption value; limited time offer).
Rewards rate: Earn unlimited 3X points on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services, and phone plans; plus earn 1X points on other purchases.
Why we like it: There’s no limit on how many points you can earn with the Wells Fargo Autograph and the bonus categories can easily align with purchases you’re already making.
You can also take advantage of an intro APR offer with 0% intro APR for 12 months from account opening on purchases (then 20.24%, 25.24%, or 29.99% Variable).
In addition, you can use the cell phone protection benefit to help protect against damage or theft when paying your monthly cell phone bill with your card.
What we don’t like: There’s no intro APR offer on qualifying balance transfers and the lack of transfer partners leaves you fewer travel redemption options.

Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi
Pros | Cons |
|
|
Rewards rate: Earn 4% cash back on eligible gas and EV charging purchases (up to $7,000, then 1% thereafter); 3% on restaurants and eligible travel purchases; 2% on all other purchases from Costco and Costco.com; and 1% on all other purchases.
Why we like it: It’s hard to beat the earning potential on this card if you’re a frequent Costco shopper. You also aren’t limited to using the Costco Anywhere Visa only at Costco, as it’s accepted anywhere Visa credit cards are accepted. That could be helpful if you want a card with no foreign transaction fees for international travel.
What we don’t like: You need to be a Costco member, and there’s typically no welcome bonus. You can also only redeem your cash back as an annual reward certificate (kind of like a Costco gift card) for cash or merchandise at U.S. Costco warehouses. Certificates are rewarded after your February billing statement closes, leaving little room for flexibility.

Ink Business Cash® Credit Card
Pros | Cons |
|
|
Welcome offer: Earn $900 bonus cash back after you spend $6,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

Why we like it: For a card with a $0 annual fee, the Ink Business Cash is extremely competitive with its earning rates. It’s difficult to find other business credit cards that can provide the same type of earning potential on common business purchases.
Even better, you earn cashback rewards in the form of Chase Ultimate Rewards points, which you can redeem for travel, cash back, and more.
What we don’t like: Bonus categories are capped with how much you can earn each year and you have to pay foreign transaction fees on applicable purchases.

How do gas credit cards work?
Gas credit cards function similarly to any type of credit card issued by a bank, credit union, or other financial institution. You simply swipe them at the gas pump or inside the gas station to pay for your purchase and then make sure you pay off your balance before the due date.
The primary difference between a standard credit card and a card labeled as a “gas credit card” is that gas credit cards typically provide additional rewards for gas purchases. This could help you earn plenty of valuable points, miles, or cash back if you make a lot of gas purchases.
With fluctuating gas prices, it's common to use gas credit cards and other strategies, such as filling up at warehouse clubs like Sam's Club or Costco, to help lower your overall gas bill.
Types of gas credit cards
Gas credit cards are typically separated into three categories:
1. Cards that earn bonus rewards on gas
These are rewards credit cards that earn points, miles, or cash back at different rates depending on the category. For example, a cashback credit card might earn a 1% rate on all purchases, but then 3% back on fuel purchases.
2. Cards that earn flat-rate rewards
These are general rewards cards that don’t necessarily earn higher rates on specific types of purchases. So you can use them to make gas or other purchases and earn the same rate on everything. For example, you might have a card that earns 2X miles on every purchase you make, which makes it easy to carry only one card in your wallet.
3. Closed-loop gas credit cards
These are brand-specific credit cards that only work at certain gas stations and nowhere else. These cards typically provide bonus rewards for all purchases with the applicable brand. For example, you might have a credit card that provides bonus rewards, but you can only use it at Shell stations.
How to choose a gas rewards card
From 1993 to 2022, U.S. gas prices have ranged from about $1 per gallon of gas to over $5 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. As gas tends to get more expensive, the need to save money at the gas pump becomes more important.
Gas rewards credit cards offer opportunities to help soften the blow when you fill up your tank. Use these factors to help narrow down your choices and select the right gas rewards card for you:
- Rewards rate: The higher the earning rate on gas, the more bonus rewards you could earn on visits to the gas station — whether you're filling up at a specific gas station for work or on a fun road trip. Note that some credit cards could also reward you for using charging stations to charge your electric vehicle.
- Welcome bonus: If multiple cards have similar benefits, the card with the higher sign-up bonus or welcome offer might make the most sense.
- Annual fee: Cards with annual fees typically offer more perks and benefits than no-annual-fee options. But if you’re new to credit cards or want to keep your overall costs low, a card without an annual fee might make the most sense.
- Card issuer: Do you already have a relationship with a certain card issuer? If so, it might make sense to stick with them. But it’s also not a bad thing to have cards from multiple companies.
- Personal or business: Choosing between personal or business credit cards could significantly alter your available options. You might discover that perks, benefits, and rewards rates tend to vary between personal and business cards.
- Credit score requirements: You can typically qualify for most credit cards if you have a good credit score, which is at least a 670 on the FICO scoring range. Keep in mind that credit card issuers check various creditworthiness factors to determine if you qualify, so having a high credit score doesn't always guarantee your approval.
- Other benefits: What benefits do you want on a card? Look for your preferred benefits — whether it’s purchase protection, rental car insurance, or something else — while comparing credit card offers. If you're interested in an intro APR offer, remember that there are typically balance transfer fees with balance transfers. And once an intro APR ends, the variable APR typically takes over for most providers.
Methodology: How we compared these cards
These credit card offers were chosen because they offered the highest gas rewards in different scenarios. We tried to be inclusive by choosing a variety of cards from a variety of credit card issuers, including cash rewards credit cards, cards for people with good or excellent credit, and cards without any annual fees. These are all great credit cards to have in your wallet, but make sure you read the card details for any you're interested in before you fill out an application.
